Man dies in boating mishap near Kimmirut

Aluminum boat capsizes in strong currents

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

One man died while another man survived a boating accident near Kimmirut in the early morning hours of June 26, the Nunavut RCMP said in a news release.

Police said the two men were boating around 1:30 a.m. June 26 at the reversing falls of Soper Lake, where high tides during a full moon bring sea water into the lake and reverse the flow of fresh water from Soper River.

After their boat capsized in rough waters, bystanders were able to rescue one man quickly.

But strong currents carried the other man downstream. Searchers recovered his body later, at around 5:30 a.m.

“Kimmirut search and rescue responded and community members had boats in the water within minutes,” police said in a news release.

The RCMP said they will not release the names of those involved in the accident, due to a request from family.
