On April 17, 2014 the Metcalfe District Hockey Association Minor Atom River Rats hockey team, composed of 13 players, had the opportunity to travel to Iqaluit for the Toonik Tyme hockey tournament.
The team was accompanied by 20 coaches, parents and siblings who also enjoyed this unique experience. The team was graciously hosted by the Iqaluit Amateur Hockey Association and was welcomed by the community.
Some of the activities that the team was able to enjoy during their four-day trip included the seal skinning competition, a hike at the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park, a stop by the Unikkaarvik Visitor Centre, a look in at the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, as well as a very educational and enjoyable tour of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, generously conducted by Iqaluit-Tasiluk MLA George Hickes.
Our team also snowmobiled out on the sea ice of Frobisher Bay, as some local friends generously lent us their snow machines and qamutiks.
This trip was exceptional and without the support of our sponsors, none of this would have been possible.
We would like to thank the Iqaluit businesses that helped us during our stay, with particular thanks to Julie Beauchesne at Nunattaq Suites, Eric Leuthold of Frobisher Bay Touchdown Service, Colin Malloy of Arctic Electrical, as well as First Air.
We cannot thank our friends, and the community, enough for making us feel so very welcomed.
