New program promotes fitness for Inuit and First Nations

“There are plenty of ways to stay fit based on our traditional and modern activities”

Inuit and First Nations leaders launched a new online fitness project March 19 aimed at improving health and fitness among indigenous people in Canada.

The “Just Move It – Canada” program builds on a web-based networking tool developed in the United States for American indigenous communities.

The first of its kind in Canada, Just Move It will highlight new and existing programs promoting physical activity and wellness that are driven by aboriginal culture. The program is promoted by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the Assembly of First Nations and Healthy Native Communities Partnership Inc.

“Whether it’s minus-50 degrees in our beautiful winter or plus-20 in summer I encourage Inuit to go outside, enjoy nature, and Just Move It by engaging in traditional Inuit activities, recreational sports leagues, or going to the community centre,” said ITK president Mary Simon.

“There are plenty of ways to stay fit based on our traditional and modern activities. Let’s all get fit and stay fit.”

Through the website, Inuit, community organizations and health professionals can learn about wellness initiatives in other communities and diseases affecting aboriginal people, as well as gain access to resources.

Inuit may also use the website to learn how to start an activity in their own community, share information about programs, contribute stories and enter information in the Just Move It calendar.

Community fitness and wellness workers from across the country are gathered in Ottawa this week for a two-day workshop, funded by Health Canada, where they’ll share experiences and help shape the future of Just Move It in Canada.

“We applaud this new interactive tool that improves awareness of physical activity and wellness, and motivates people to make healthy choices,” said Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq in a March 19 news release.
