No gas or fuel price increase this year in Nunavut: minister

If you live in Nunavut, you won’t be paying more to fill up your car’s tank with gasoline or your home’s fuel reservoir this winter.

The Government of Nunavut announced Nov. 1 that it won’t be increasing the price of gasoline and home heating fuel for Nunavummiut.

Lorne Kusugak, Nunavut’s minister of Community and Government Services, said in the Nunavut legislature that this was “a direct result of efforts made through my department’s early purchase of petroleum products during a period of volatile global fuel prices.”

“In 2012 my department purchased 210 million litres of fuel for this year’s annual resupply. Of this, 71 million was purchased early when fuel prices were lower than what would have been paid during the normal purchase period,” he said.

As a result, he said it’s the fourth year in a row that this GN has either reduced the price of home heating fuel and gasoline, or been able to maintain the current price.
