Nominations open for Qikiqtani Inuit elections

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association has opened nominations for six positions that will go up for election this Dec. 10.

QIA will hold a region-wide vote to choose a secretary-treasurer and five community-only elections to choose new community directors for the following hamlets:

• Arctic Bay;

• Cape Dorset;

• Grise Fiord;

• Qikiqtarjuaq; and

• Resolute Bay.

Nominations opened Oct. 22 and will close Nov. 5 at 5:00 p.m. eastern time.

Each of the available positions carries a three-year term that expires December 2015.

The incumbent secretary-treasurer is Joe Attagutaluk of Igloolik.

Prospective candidates may get nomination forms from the QIA website at www.qia.ca, the QIA head office in Iqaluit or from local community liason officers.

Nomination papers may be sent by fax, but they must be received at QIA’s head office in Iqaluit before Nov. 5 at 5:00 p.m.
