Northern newspapers scoop up awards
Editor Todd Phillips accepted two awards on behalf of Nunatsiaq News earlier this month at the Ontario Community Newspapers Association convention in Toronto for our work in 1996.
Competing against weekly newspapers from across the province, Phillips won the Walter Brebner award for the best editorial.
“This editorial fearlessly accuses the local Legion of ‘regularly over-serving customers in a community already choking on the excess of alcohol abuse’ and offers some sensible solutions for the problem,” wrote the judges in their comments, choosing the editorial first out of 97 entrants from across the province.

Nunatsiaq News also placed second in the best color tabloid front-page category.
News/North also won several awards at this year’s event, including best overall newspaper in its circulation class, first place for best sports and recreation story, third place for best black-and-white tabloid front page, and third place for best special section. Congratulations from Nunatsiaq News.
Editor Todd Phillips is leaving Nunatsiaq News this week for a new job in Burlington, Ontario.
Assistant editor Dwane Wilkin takes over as editor, and Nunatsiaq News is looking for a new reporter to join the award-winning team.
