NTI Announces 2013 Jose Amaujaq Kusugak scholarship recipients

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Cathy Towtongie announced July 29 the recipients of the 2013 Jose Amaujaq Kusugak scholarships: Anita Uutttuvak of Pond Inlet and Bridgette Tattuinee of Rankin Inlet.

“Both of these applicants submitted outstanding essays with their application packages. They clearly expressed their dedication to their studies and to advancing Inuit rights, and both successful candidates wrote very well about Jose’s accomplishments and legacy,” said Towtongie in an NTI release. “Although these two candidates were chosen as the 2013 recipients, all of the applications were very strong. Once again, the selection committee had their work cut out for them.”

The two students will each receive $5,000 toward their studies.

Uuttuvak is pursuing her fourth year in an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Ottawa.

Tattuinee is enrolled in her first year of the Nunavut Teacher’s Education Program in Arviat.

“Congratulations to Bridgette and Anita on receiving the Jose Amaujaq Kusugak scholarship. Our family is very proud of both women, and wishes them all the best during their studies. Thank you so much for keeping Jose’s legacy alive through your amazing essays and telling how you will use your education to help fellow Inuit,” said Pujjuut Kusugak on behalf of his family.

A total of 14 students applied for the scholarship this year.

The next deadline for the Jose Amaujaq Kusugak scholarship falls on July 9, 2014. Students enrolled or eligible to enroll under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement are eligible to apply.
