Nunavik’s Inuit birthright organization has named two new members to its honorary board of governors.

Makivik Corp. appointed two elders to the board Aug. 2: Kangiqsujuaq elder Minnie Etidloie and Kangirsuk elder Jeannie Nungak.

The Nunavik Board of Governors is an honorary, ad hoc panel that serves in an advisory role to Makivik’s board of directors, and from time to time takes on assignments directed by the board.

Etidloie has for years been active with a number of regional and national organizations, including the Saturviit Inuit Women’s Association of Nunavik and Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada.

Nungak, a well-known accordion player, has served as a municipal and regional councillor with the Kativik Regional Government.

“A Nunavik governor plays a distinguished role within our Inuk society and these two ladies have earned the recognition through their works,” said Makivik president Jobie Tukkiapik in an Aug. 2 release.

Starting Oct. 1, the two women will serve a three-year term on the board. Etidloie and Nungak will join a third board member, Eva Deer, who has served as governor for the last nine years.
