Nunavik school board council elects new, old president

The Kativik School Board’s Council of Commissioners has elected a new executive, returning a former president back into her previous position as president.

KSB commissioners elected Alicie Nalukturuk of Inukjuak as president of the council Dec. 9 during commissioners’ meetings in Montreal.

Nalukturuk returns as president to the council after a three-year hiatus. In the KSB’s 2011 election, she lost her council seat to fellow Inukjuamiut Johnny Kasudluak, who went on to serve as council president.

Nalukturuk ran in last month’s commissioners’ election and won. Kasudluak did not run again in the Nov. 19 election.

On Dec. 9, commissioners also elected Peter Papyarluk as vice president of the council, while Joseph Annahatak, Sarah Beaulne and Charlie Tooktoo were elected as executive committee members.

But on Dec. 16, the KSB announced that Annahatak had stepped down from the executive committee, replaced by Aupaluk commissioner Martin Scott.

The KSB’s Council of Commissioners has eight new members, following a Nov. 19 election in Nunavik.

Nunavimmiut elected a total of 10 commissioners in the regional election, while four others were acclaimed.

The new council, which will sit for a three-year term, is meeting for the first time in Montreal from Dec. 9 to Dec. 12.
