Nunavik’s Kativik School Board has a new commissioner for the Hudson Bay community of Umiujaq: Emily Lucy Tookalook, who was acclaimed to the position April 5.
Tookalook stepped forward after Umiujaq’s former commissioner, Alicia Aragutak, resigned from the position earlier this year. Aragutak is now the president of the Qarjuit Nunavik Youth Forum.
Tookalook joined the school board’s council of commissioners at its most recent board meetings, hosted in Kuujjuaq April 5 to April 7, the KSB said in a release.
The KSB’s current council has been in place since late 2014, when council president Alicie Nalukturuk was elected as commissioner for Inukjuak and also to the council’s executive committee.
Nalukturuk returns as president to the council after a three-year hiatus.
Peter Papyarluk serves as vice-president, while Martin Scott (Aupaluk), Sarah Beaulne (Puvirnituq) and Mary Pilurtuut (Kativik Regional Government represenative) sit as executive members.
