Nunavik’s MP slams Nutrition North in Parliament

New Democratic Party MP Romeo Saganash, who represents Abitibi–James Bay–Nunavik–Eeyou) slammed what he called the Conservative government’s indifference to the high cost of living in the North, in a statement he gave in the House of Commons earlier this week.

“I have the pleasure of representing one of the largest ridings in Canada, which means I have a lot of communities to visit,” Saganash said Oct. 1, speaking in French and English.

“But all of them have the same problem: the rising food costs and cost of living in the North. There is a reason why 20,000 people joined a Facebook group called “Feeding my Family,” a movement looking to find solutions to this problem.”

Unfortunately, the only response by the government to this crisis is pure indifference, Saganash said.

“The prime minister visited the North, but continues to ignore the problem. New Democrats believe the North cannot achieve its full potential until those who live there have access to quality affordable food. It’s time the Conservatives took this issue seriously in the best interest of all northern Canadians.”
