Nunavut cops make two booze-dope busts in Baker Lake

Police seized alcohol and made two arrests in two separate incidents in Baker Lake last week, the Nunavut RCMP said Oct. 1.

On Sept. 26, police arrested a “Quebec resident” in Baker Lake and charged the person with trafficking marijuana, an RCMP news release said.

Police said the incident is not related to last week’s crackdown on a major Montreal-based drug network, which is alleged to have exported marijuana to communities in Nunavik and Nunavut.

That person, who was not named, has been released after appearing before a Justice of the Peace and will appear in Nunavut court Dec. 3.

On Sept. 27, police arrested a Gjoa Haven resident in Baker Lake whom they allege was involved in bootlegging. Following an investigation, police seized “several bottles” of alcohol.

That person is also scheduled to appear in Nunavut court Dec. 3.

The RCMP said they wanted to thank concerned citizens who assist with this type of investigation and encouraged “everyone to get involved” in the Oct. 1 news release.
