Nunavut hamlets welcome new crop of mayors, councillors

Nunavut has eight new mayors — some new, some re-elected, one of them acclaimed — following Dec. 14 hamlet elections held across the territory.

In Nunavut, where the two- and three-year terms of mayors and councillors are staggered, roughly half of elected hamlet positions were up for election in 2015.

In the Baffin region, voters elected mayors in six communities. In Clyde River, James Qillaq was acclaimed as mayor, after the incumbent mayor and candidate Jerry Natanine was disqualified from seeking re-election.

In the Kivalliq region, Rankin Inlet was one of only two communities to vote for a mayor, re-electing Robert Janes to the position.

“We want Rankin to be a safe, healthy and comfortable environment to provide for the well-being of families, individuals and the community,” Janes wrote on social media Dec. 15.

“Thank you Rankin Inlet for re-electing me as your mayor and giving me the opportunity to contribute to the growth of our community.”

In neighbouring Whale Cove, Stanley Adjuk Sr. won a six-way race for the community’s top job.

In the Kitikmeot region, Cambridge Bay residents re-elected Jeannie Ehaloak over two other candidates.

“I will work hard to make out community a better place,” she said Dec. 15.
