Nunavut leaders send congrats to new ITK president

Nunavut leaders sent their congratulations to Terry Audla June 7, the day following his election as president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.

Premier Eva Aariak said in a statement that, with more than 17 years with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association and more than a year as chief executive officer of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., “Terry has proven himself as an experienced, thoughtful and hard-working leader. ITK represents Inuit nationally and internationally and I am pleased that a fellow Nunavummiuq will be working to advance the interests of Inuit across Canada and throughout the world. I wish Terry the best of luck in his new position and look forward to working with him on Inuit issues.”

NTI president Cathy Towtongie said that “after having worked with Terry in his role as chief executive officer of NTI and executive director of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, I know that he is a competent leader and will provide steady direction for ITK. This is an important office because it represents Inuit on the national stage and is essential to advancing Inuit interests in the coming years.”

Audla has resigned his position as NTI’s CEO, effective immediately.

“NTI will be filling the position through an open and transparent process,” Towtongie said. “A three-person recruitment committee will be formed to handle the screening and interviewing of potential internal and external candidates, and to make recommendations to the executive and the board.”

NTI’s director of legal services Arthur Yuan will act as CEO until NTI appoints a new CEO.
