An Iqaluit man has been charged with a number of serious offences after allegedly forcing a 12-year-old girl into a residence and sexually assaulting her.
In an Aug. 11 release, Iqaluit RCMP said officers responded to a complaint around 8 p.m. Aug. 8 of an alleged sexual assault in the 100 block area of the city.
According to the release, citizens, who “realized the seriousness of the matter,” helped to interrupt the assault.
“The male attempted to flee the scene but was caught and held by a citizen until police arrived,” the release said.
The man, whose name is being withheld by police, has been charged with sexual interference, sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery, uttering threats and breach of probation.
He is scheduled for a bail hearing on Aug. 12 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit.
