Nunavut police say they’ve arrested and charged an Iqaluit man with sexual assault after he’s alleged to have attacked a woman along the community’s breakwater May 25.

A woman was out walking her dog around 9:30 p.m. that evening when she says she was approached by a lone male, who grabbed her and fondled her.

The 25-year-old woman screamed and was able to fight off the attacker and call police.

Shortly afterwards, officers arrested and charged Markoosie Tiglik, 23 with sexual assault and breach of undertaking, the RCMP said June 1.

The 23-year-old remains in custody until his next court appearance June 14.

The Nunavut RCMP encouraged other victims of sexual assault to come forward to police.

“This is an opportunity for police to remind Nunavummiut to be mindful and cautious of this very harmful and disrespectful act,” the RCMP said in a release.

“Should you or someone you know have been victim of a crime, please report it to the police and there is help available.”
