“Our Water, Our Land, Our Life” conference comes to Iqaluit

They’re not often acknowledged for the work they do, but Nunavik’s municipal water plant operators help ensure that drinking water is clean in homes across the region.

But now four of them are being recognized for their outstanding efforts.

Kangiqsujuaq’s Mary Sakiagak, Aupaluk’s Masha Oninnak, Quaqtaq’s Jusipi Kulula and Puvirnituq’s Aisa Alasuak have been selected to represent the region at a conference hosted by the Northern Territories Water and Waste Association.

The 2011 conference, titled “Our Water, Our Land, Our Life,” takes place in Iqaluit Nov. 18 to 22.

The conference is expected to draw water operators and treatment specialists from across the North.

The five-day conference will include presentations on water and waste treatment research, an equipment trade show as well as operator workshops.

Nunavik’s four municipal drinking-water plant operators will be accompanied by Alexandre Brissette, assistant director of the Kativik Regional Government’s municipal public works department.

Brissette is scheduled to give a presentation Nov. 20 on Nunavik’s water treatment infrastructure.
