Photo: A humble setting for big decisions

People around the world are hearing about the little community in North Baffin that’s fighting the federal government, and multi-national companies, to preserve its way of life and to earn respect for traditional culture. Well, here’s where it all happens. Clyde River photographer Niore Iqalukjuak, an opponent of seismic testing off the coast of Baffin Island, snapped this photo recently of the board room table in the Nammautaq Hunters and Trappers Organization office in Clyde River where residents meet to discuss issues related to harvesting and the environment. It’s made from two-by-fours and plywood. “They make way better decisions then the people sitting in luxury rooms and tables,” wrote one commenter on Facebook, beneath Iqalukjuak’s posted photo.
