Doug Cunningham, the CEO of Arctic Fibre Inc., stands near the Apex beach Aug. 19, displaying sample pieces of the type of marine fibre optic cable that his company is proposing to install between London, New York and Tokyo through the waters of the Canadian Arctic. Powerful fibre optic lines like these, with a circumference roughly equal to that of a garden hose, are capable of transmitting hundreds of millions of phone calls, internet connections, television signals and other forms of digitized data simultaneously. For its connection to Iqaluit, the company proposes landing the cable at a spot near the access road that leads to the old Hudson's Bay Co. buildings in Apex. (PHOTO BY JIM BELL)
