Photo: A magic castle in the snow

A 10-foot-high snow castle, replete with tunnels, ramparts and turrets, entices Iqaluit kids from behind the old Inuit Broadcasting Corp. building in the city’s Base area. A local parent, François Ouellette, said on Iqaluit’s Public Service Announcement Facebook page Jan. 4 that he’s built a snow fort in that location in each of the past five years. “There are some pretty high parts this year, mostly owing to the fact that as my son grows, so do my plans,” Ouellette wrote. He also posted a set of safety and common courtesy rules, or “really good suggestions,” for parents and kids using the castle. And he encourages Iqalungmiut to pitch in and make the castle even better. “I know it ain’t my snow, but in the interest of fun and good architecture, let’s make our efforts work together,” Ouellette wrote on Facebook.
