Photo: A memorial for relocated Inuit

National Inuit Youth Council President Maatalii Okalik reads through the names of the former residents of Hebron, an Inuit village and former Moravian mission in Labrador, where the 2016 Students on Ice group spent the day July 27. The bronze plaque Okalik reads is part of a National Historic site monument to honour the families who, in 1959, were relocated from the village by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Students on Ice participants were in Hebron to take part in the launch of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami’s National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy that day when bad weather forced ITK to host the launch in Kuujjuaq instead.
