Photo: A normal year for ice in Frobisher Bay

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

At low tide June 21, a piece of jetsam lies amidst rotting ice off the Iqaluit shoreline. The Canadian Ice Service’s forecast for Frobisher Bay this summer suggest that this year we won’t likely see the severe ice conditions that clogged the bay for much of July and August last year. Their 30-day outlook for the period June 19 to July 15 suggests a lot of first-year pack ice until the end of June. By the first week of July they predict that ice will begin to fracture, opening up the bay, and that ice will be completely melted by the end of July. (PHOTO BY JIM BELL)
