A look up to the top of the large qaggiq in Rankin Inlet made by elders for participants in this past week’s commemoration event in Rankin Inlet, “Left behind-Never Again,” for residential school survivors. The theme: “honouring the children taken and healing and moving forward with those left behind.” The igloo has provided a protective place for healing, said Piita Irniq, who attended the Sir Joseph Bernier residential school as a young boy — and it has also offered a chance for youth in the community to hear about the residential school experience that Irniq and others lived through.
