Photo: Aglukkaq meets with indigenous reps in Kiruna, Sweden

Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq, also Canada’s minister responsible for the Arctic Council, meets May 14 with Saami leaders and representatives of the indigenous permanent participant groups which sit at the Arctic Council. Nunavut MLA Tagak Curley, third from right in the back, is also in Kiruna to attend the Arctic Council meetings. “We’re dealing with our future in the Arctic, especially Nunavut, as the oceans are becoming less ice-congested and perhaps shipping through Arctic waters may become an issue,” Curley said May 10 in the Nunavut legislature. “I believe we, as elected officials, have to listen to these discussions.” For more coverage on the May 15 ministerial meeting of the Arctic Council, read Nunatsiaqonline.ca.
