Photo: An untold story of death of an iceberg

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Call in the mammal coroner... A polar bear carcass sits atop an iceberg in Baffin Bay near Clyde River Aug. 15. Photographer Niore Iqalukjuak was out boating and on his way into Isabella Bay last weekend but never made it because the inlet, just south of Clyde River, was clogged with ice. It was near there, in Baffin Bay, where he spotted something floating on an iceberg. It was the carcass of a polar bear. A close-up photo of the remains, which you can find on Iqalukjuak's Facebook page, shows the animal lying on its side with only bones and fur remaining. It's unclear how the animal died though one Facebook commenter suggested another polar bear might have killed and eaten it. Like the other, very alive, polar bear Iqalukjuak photographed that same day, swimming and climbing atop ice pans. You can find those photos on Facebook as well. (PHOTO BY NIORE IQALUKJUAK)
