Photo: Arviat student honoured for community leadership

Arviat student Shelby Angalik (middle row, second from left) is the recipient of a TD Scholarship for Community Leadership, an award handed out to secondary students from across the country to recognize the work they’ve done making their communities a better place to live. Angalik, a student at John Arnalukjuak high school, was nominated for the award for her efforts to build literacy among Arviat youth. In recent years, Angalik has helped to create a children’s reading program, in Inuktitut and English; she’s helped maintain the local library after its paid librarian position was cut and she’s coordinated a program to help grade eight students transition to high school. Angalik herself hopes to pursue a career as a librarian and the award will go a long way to help — the TD scholarships are valued up to $70,000 each. (PHOTO COURTESY OF TD)
