Photo: Bad weather doesn’t stop Iqaluit voters

A blustery autumn snow squall that brought winds of 40 to 60 km/h and about 5 cm of snow didn’t keep Iqaluit voters away from the polls Oct. 15. Iqaluit residents will elect a mayor, eight city councillors and five members for the Iqaluit District Education Authority. Ratepayers only will vote in a referendum to authorize borrowing of up to $40 million for a new aquatic centre. Just after 2:00 p.m., more than 400 people had already voted at the Iqaluit cadet hall, one of two polling places. Polling closes at 7:00 p.m. Iqaluit’s returning officer, Kirt Ejesiak, said that as soon results are available, they will be posted on the Iqaluit elections website: www.iqaluitelections.ca.
