Photo: Berry-picking season in Sanikiluaq

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A field of delicious dreams: a huge patch of aqpik berries ripens in the long days of summer in Sanikiluaq. Aqpiks, sometimes called cloudberries, salmonberries or bakeapples in other parts of the world, are a summer treat for Nunavummuit and Nunavimmiut who use them in baking, cooking or just as a snack. Delicious, yes, but also really good for you. Earlier this year, Nunatsiaqonline.ca reported on some research out of Laval university in Quebec City which suggested aqpik berries increase healthy microbes in your intestines and can help prevent or even diminish diabetes symptoms.
