Photo: Big jet in Iqaluit for cold weather testing

This Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with Air Canada markings landed at Iqaluit Airport for cold weather testing, Jan. 5, late in the day, when the temperature measured -30 C. This model of passenger aircraft has flown commercially worldwide since 2011, according to Boeing’s website, but none has ever landed in Iqaluit for tests or routine business. “It’s certainly the first time that one’s come in for any kind of testing, or any kind of extended stay,” said airport manager John Hawkins. The passenger aircraft is almost 57 metres long, with an even longer wingspan – measuring 60 metres wide. If you stood the aircraft vertically, it would be taller than a 15-storey building.
