Photo: Breaking the ice in search of the Erebus

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Parks Canada and Royal Canadian Navy divers have broken through the ice in the Canadian Arctic and have begun the diving operation on HMS Erebus, one of two ships which sailed — and were lost — during the ill-fated 1845 Sir John Franklin expedition. Underwater archaeologists will continue the dive operation until April 17, weather permitting. The Erebus was found in September 2014. The location of Franklin's other ship, the HMS Terror, has not been located yet. (PHOTO COURTESY OF PARKS CANADA)
