George Naikak Hakongak shaves Cambridge Bay mayor Jeannie Ehaloak’s hair May 4 in Cambridge Bay for a good cause. The hair-shaving fundraiser raised $4,420 for the “Women in Action- Steps of Hope” walk, which starts May 7. That’s when walkers Ehaloak, Janet Brewster, Elisabeth Hadlari, Jamie McInnis, Donna Olsen-Hakongak, and Nunavut Commissioner Edna Elias set off on a 220- kilometre walk across Coronation Gulf from Bay Chimo to Cambridge Bay. So far they’ve raised more than $60,000 for breast cancer research. The proceeds from the walk support the Alberta Cancer Foundation and will be directed towards research to finding a cure for cancer. You can also donate online at: www.albertacancer.ca/womeninaction. Read more about the walk later on Nunatsiaqonline.ca. (PHOTO COURTESY OF THE WOMEN IN ACTION)
