Photo: Cambridge Bay’s communications tower’s last stand

A crew from Nav Canada began work Aug. 5 on the demolition of Cambridge Bay’s beloved 620-foot LORAN tower. Built in 1947 as part of a long-range radio communication system, the tower in recent years has been used as a beacon to help guide aircraft. Nav Canada will replace the old tower with a new 160-foot tower that’s expected to operate by late October. Many Cambridge Bay residents were opposed to the removal of the tower, which hunters have used for years as a landmark. But Nav Canada says the tower is “no longer structurally sound” and must be replaced. (PHOTO COURTESY OF NUKA OLSEN-HAKONGAK)
