This cord looped around utility poles in Kuujjuaq holds fibre optic ready to be linked into homes, businesses and office buildings in Nunavik’s largest community. As part of region-wide upgrades by the regional internet provider, Tamaani, crews are installing fibre-to-the-home connections that should be complete by the end of the year. Unlike a fibre optic connection that transmits data over long distances through undersea cable, this system will still rely on satellite and deliver the same bandwidth speeds. But local distribution will be connected by fibre optic, which will help avoid congestion on the local network.
