Photo: Diving in Cambridge Bay, but not for the Maud

Ocean Networks Canada, based out of the University of Victoria, operates underwater ocean observatories including one in Cambridge Bay. Crews were in that Kitikmeot community this summer to install a new observatory platform, which houses camera equipment and other sensors, as well as replace some of the other techology. The new platform has three times as many instruments as the original one installed in 2012. The observatory is helping researchers collect data on Cambridge Bay’s marine environment including water and ice properties as well as on the animals and plants that live there.
