Photo: Elder shares AWG experience

Kangiqsualujjuaq elder Christina Baron spoke to Nunavik athletes Jan. 20 at the opening ceremonies of the Arctic Winter Games snowshoe tryouts, held in her community over the weekend. Baron shared her own experiences from the 1976 AWG, where she participated in snowshoe events and won multiple medals. Baron also encouraged the young athletes to make healthy life choices like avoiding smoking, junk foods and staying active.The weekend event in Kangiqsualujjuaq hosted snowshow tryouts, as well as a training workshop for Nunavik’s badminton team, ahead of the 2012 AWG being held in Whitehorse, Yukon, this March.
