Photo: Flying up in the sky during Toonik Tyme

A girl soars high during the Alaskan blanket toss event at the Toonik Tyme festival’s traditional Inuit games in Iqaluit, April 4. Festival-goers flung willing participants — who weren’t too heavy — into the air with a large circular canvas. The spectacle is one of several traditional games that organizer Solomon Awa added to this year’s 50th anniversary festival. This particular one comes from Alaska, where Inupiat typically made a large trampoline-like surface from a large walrus hide, Awa said, which allowed them to see further into the distance when thrown to a great height.
