Photo: Food on the hoof near Rankin Inlet

By SPECIAL TO NUNATSIAQ NEWS

On July 14, the people of Rankin Inlet watched a large herd of caribou pass their community after hot dry weather in the interior and south-east winds brought the caribou to the coast for the annual journey towards their summer calving grounds. A herd of 6,000 to 8,000 passed through this past Saturday and Sunday, a first-time scene for many in the community and a delight for the community's hunters, who caught and shared fresh caribou meat.
