Photo: From Nunavut hunter to politician and back

“The ingenuity of Inuit is tremendous,” says former NDP candidate and veteran Nunavut politician Jack Anawak during a Nunavut Tourism sponsored lecture at Iqaluit’s Unikkaarvik Visitors Centre Jan. 19. Anawak told stories from his youth growing up near Naujaat in the 1950s when Inuit were still dependent on a hunting and gathering lifestyle. Roughly 20 spectators learned about traditional seal hunting tactics, passed down to Anawak from his father, which demanded absolute attention to detail, patience and the ingenius use of materials available. “We had everything we needed,” he told the audience. Drop by the visitors centre Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. for the next in the speaker series: “Life Stories, Tools and Traditions,” as told by hunter and land expert Pitseolak Alainga.
