Photo: Gyrfalcon, queen of the Arctic skies

A female gyrfalcon, the largest of the falcon species, perches on a rocky cliff about 130 kilometres north of Baker Lake May 23. While some gyrfalcons migrate south in winter, some stay in Nunavut year-round. Fierce predators, gyrfalcons eat mostly small mammals and other birds, sometimes swooping down on them, in mid-air, from above. (PHOTO BY LARS QAQQAQ)
