Photo: Hoar frost makes mysteries of Nunavut street signs

Stop! At least we think so… Hoar frost, that gray-ish white crystalline lace that sometimes forms on surfaces in cold conditions is like winter’s version of dew. Unlike regular frost, hoar frost needs higher humidity or a nearby source of moisture, to grow those long or clumped up chunks of ice. This Pond Inlet stop sign, located on the road that heads to the beach, was shot by Pangnirtung-based photographer and blogger Sarah McMahon on Nov. 27 at around noon. She said it was -30C that day, -38C with the windchill. (PHOTO BY SARAH MCMAHON)
