Photo: Honouring former residential school students

Cambridge Bay SAO Stephen King stands with hamlet employee Kevin Taylor at the Truth and Reconciliation park right outside Cambridge Bay. As Taylor, who etched the stone in his spare time explains, its design is meant to honour former residential school students as well as Cambridge Bay’s history, culture and people: children, parents and grandparents (three circles to the right), the familiar Loran Tower, now torn down, an inuksuk and a seaplane. The park, a hamlet project, called “A Lasting Legacy: For the child taken, for the parents left behind,” also features a gazebo, benches and three inuksuit. (PHOTO BY JANE GEORGE)
