Here's the latest tool in polar bear management in Arviat this fall: a bear trap, designed by local wildlife officer Joe Savikataaq Jr. Set up on a trailer positioned between the local dump and the community, Savikataaq baits the trap with seal meat, and once a bear walks into it, the gate doors shuts. But there's no harm done; Savikataaq then drives the polar bear north of the community and releases it, where the animal can continue on its migration North, without causing any damage in town.
