The Inuit Circumpolar Council’s Rena Skifte, Aqqaluk Lynge, Marianne L. Thomsen, Marianne Stenbaek, Hjalmar Dahl and Anne Katrine Brandt Olsen are representing ICC at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples. The forum, which meets for 10 days each year at the UN in New York City, is a high-level advisory body that deals with indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, environment, education, health and human rights. On May 14, its discussions focussed on the rights of indigenous peoples to food and “food sovereignty” as well as plans for a World Conference on Indigenous People in 2014. Later this week, on May 17, ICC will participate in a special event to mark the fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. (PHOTO COURTESY OF ICC)
