Photo: Ice jazz musician tones instruments

Norwegian jazz musician Terje Isungset, who makes music on instruments made from ice, at left, listens to the tone of a piece of ice prepared by Bill Covitz, his ice instrument maker, in tent set up outside Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit. Isungset will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 19, , part of the Alianait arts festival concert series. The instruments for the Iqaluit concert, which marks Isunget’s most northerly concert venue in North America, came from ice harvested from a lake nearby Iqaluit, carved with a chain saw and picks and smoothed with a blow torch.
