Photo: Indigenous peoples seek action on good governance

Inuit Circumpolar Council president Aqqaluk Lynge, left, and Áile Javo, president of the Saami council are representing Inuit and indigenous interests at the 13th session of the United Nations’ Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at UN Headquarters in New York this week. The ICC and the Saami Council put out a joint statement May 12, showing their support for an optional protocol to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples – one that would focus on land and resource rights as well as rights to self-determination, self-government and autonomy.
