Photo: Inuit elder bring culture to Inuit inmates

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Piita Irniq, born near Naujaat and now living in Ottawa, retired six years ago and has been working for Correctional Service Canada ever since as an elder visitor. He visits more than a half dozen institutions within driving distance of Ottawa every week, bringing country foods, Inuktitut conversation and guidance to some of Nunavut's most serious criminal offenders. He recently invited Nunatsiaq News to join him on a trip to the medium-security Warkworth Institution. Read about that trip tomorrow morning, on nunatsiaqonline.ca. (PHOTO BY LISA GREGOIRE)
