Photo: Iqaluit dump burning like a volcano

Welcome to Iqaluit — it’s day two of the big dump fire, which will likely continue indefinitely. The smouldering heap of garbage caught fire at about 1:30 p.m. May 20. At an emergency Iqaluit City Council meeting May 20, the city’s fire chief, Luc Grandmaison, said the fire’s too big — volcano-like — and council decided to let the fire burn out. Grandmaison said refuse is burning three metres below the surface and the entire garbage pile is about 40 metres deep. (PHOTO BY DAVID MURPHY)
