Photo: Iqaluit firefighters douse morning shack fire

A full fire crew was dispatched to douse a burning shack near the beach behind the old courthouse in Iqaluit Nov. 12. Iqaluit Deputy Fire Chief George Seigler said one man occupied the shack but was outside at the time the fire started and was unharmed. A Coleman stove was found inside the shack, Seigler said, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The deputy chief added that the shack’s lone occupant is staying in a nearby shack for now but that emergency social services personnel will try to find him other temporary lodging.
