Photo: Iqaluit school group cooks for the men’s shelter

Kids in the Nanook Cooking Club follow the lead of club organizer Kerry McCluskey at the Iqaluit men’s shelter Jan. 29 where they rolled more than 700 meatballs for homeless men in Nunavut’s capital. The club, started at Nanook School in Apex by local parents, aims to teach kids about the importance of healthy food, cooking and giving back to the community. The young cooks are becoming a local catering favourite. Earlier this month they made 24 pizzas for local MLA Pat Angnakak’s constituency meeting. At the men’s shelter, the students used 50 pounds of ground beef, a whole bag of onions and five boxes of bread crumbs to stuff the shelter’s freezers full of meatballs. (PHOTO BY THOMAS ROHNER)
