Photo: Iqaluit’s landfill continues to fume

Iqaluit’s landfill continued to burn steadily May 23, over most of the garbage heap’s 160-metre length. Winds blew a wide, shifting column of smoke northwards early in the day, largely in the direction of the airport. Touched off by a deep hot spot three metres below the surface on May 20, the pile appeared to have lost some of its 10-metre height after more than two days of burning. The City of Iqaluit decided to isolate the blaze into one pile and let it burn, after they decided too much of the city’s water supply was needed to put out the blaze. (PHOTO BY PETER VARGA)
